Types of Headaches & How to Prevent Them
It is a fast paced life that we live today and we always try to squeeze-in our daily routine, into our hectic schedule. When your body is not adequately nourished, it starts complaining in the form of headaches. Headaches arise in many different forms and are mainly indicators that something is amiss in your body. Pain in the head can broadly be classified as primary headaches and secondary headaches.
Headaches resulting as a direct consequence of bodily stress. Primary Headaches can typically be of the following types:
- Stress/tension headaches – Headaches directly resulting from everyday stress and fatigue are known as tension headaches. The various reasons for this include skipping meals, dehydration, lack of proper sleep, poor sitting posture and overuse of electronic gadgets.
- Cluster headaches – These headaches typically occur during specific periods of a year for a month or more. The pain normally affects one side of the head radiating around one eye. This type of headache is seasonal and rears its ugly head in either the spring or fall. Hydration, rest, sleep and time are all common cures for this type of headache.
- Sinus headaches – Sinus headaches are caused by inability of the mucus in the sinus cavity, to drain out. This condition normally subsides with over-the-counter medication unless it is chronic sinusitis and needs medical treatment.
- Rebound headaches – Also known as medication overuse headache occurs in people who take analgesic medication very often (at least 2-3 times per week). The best known treatment is to discontinue the self-prescribed analgesic.
- Migraines – Migraines are characterized by recurring headaches for prolonged periods, pulsating pain on one side, vomiting, nausea, sensitivity to light and/or sound. Migraines are to be taken seriously and when experiencing one or more of the above symptoms, consulting your pr

Headaches that occur as a result of a primary injury in the head/neck or other illnesses in the body are termed as secondary headaches. These headaches do not resolve by themselves and prolong for more time than primary headaches.
- Cranial neuralgias and facial pain – Cranial neuralgia is a condition caused by the inflammation of certain nerves in the neck and head. Also, this condition triggers pain in the face, behind eyes, cheeks, tongue, throat and tonsils. Treatment is given after lots of tests affirming the neuralgia condition.
Simple preventive measures avoid headaches
Most headaches are treatable with over-the-counter medications that are available at pharmacies. By far, the best option is to try and prevent the onset of any headache. A few helpful tips are mentioned below:
- Do not compromise your beauty sleep.
- Do not skip your meals. It is also important to have them at the right time without delaying.
- Water is a wonder liquid that helps you stay hydrated and most importantly devoid of a stress headache. Make it a habit to drink plenty of water daily.
- Maintain a good sitting posture. Get up and walk once every twenty minutes.
- Keep up an exercise routine, at least 2-3 times a week.
- Do not form the habit of pill-popping especially painkillers and analgesics, as they cause more problems when taken frequently.
